Form to Function
Your home is a plethora of various surfaces, profiles and textures…or at least it should be. Surfaces like walls or ceilings without any sort of texture or trim would feel rather flat. Enhancements like Executive Knockdown on ceilings, Orange Peel on walls, even the sheen of paint plays an important part in the look, feel and even acoustics of your home. Built up or multi-profiled trim can add elegance to your windows and doorways where simple square edge casing might offer a more modern look. Which you choose will play a large part in defining your home’s aesthetic.
However, trim, paint, and texture can only say so much. A square room adorned with base, case and crown is a more interesting square room to be sure, but what is it’s purpose? A room with a function can be designed. That is, it can be intentionally trimmed, textured and painted according to what suits it.
Finding Purpose
The longer we live in one place, the more phases of life it will experience. A new family might want to make that extra room a nursery. A house with 3 kids may have need of a game room, an expanded laundry or a secluded Master Bedroom. Empty-nesters might be eyeing a larger Closet, a Bar room, or a Library. Singles and Childfree Partners may want a Home Gym, an Art Studio or purpose built entertainment space.
Hobbies change and grow. New interests might mean new requirements for your home. It’s typically not cost effective to buy a new home every time you engage in a new activity so that leaves remodeling what you have. Built in shelves or cabinetry can transform a space even while being built to match your current style. Adding or removing a wall or door to redefine a space and it’s flow may make all the difference.
When the Form Is the Function
Sometimes you’re not looking to convert your basement into a man cave or a lady lair. Sometimes you just want the kind of home that makes your social media followers envious and your neighbors cry. Or vice versa. Either way, you’re probably going to need a contractor.
Whether it’s reframing your doorways, adding extravagant moldings, or exquisite custom woodwork, there is no end to the improvements you can choose from to take your home from “charming” to “indulgent.”
